The Wish of a Wayfarer

(Christmas 1945 – To a friend) (Girl)

I.
Just a smile, a kiss, a Christmas wish
I’m sending you today
A kindly thought for one whose got
To travel on his way
Whom you’ll never know, but let that be so
Who liked your sunny smile
When tired and beat in a Leicester Street
He rested here awhile

II
Just a dream, caress and a prayer to bless
Your guiltless way of life
Just a passing nod and a prayer to God
To keep you free from strife.
That’s all I’ll say, I’ll be on my way
With the memory of your smile
With a heartfelt sigh, I’ll say goodbye
In poetic Irish style
