Christmas 1945

To a friend

(Thoughts of Better Days)

May peace and joy be yours this Christmastide
That’s the wish of one who often too enjoyed
An Irish Christmas of a better day
The lovely atmosphere and customs gay
Its lavish charms and its hours of fun
The merriness it held for everyone
What memories crowd my mind of those past joys
Of Christmas time in Ireland with the boys

But time goes on and changes soon appear
The ranks get thinner year by year
All ride the race of life but some are thrown
And quietly wander from the Cornerstone
Then at this time of year they wander back
Again in memory o’er that beaten track
And wish like me that blessings will abide
With you and all old friends this Christmastide
